mothers in developing countries.
The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative: Hospitals and maternity units set a powerful example for
new mothers. The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative ( BFHI ), launched in 1991, is an effort by
UNICEF and the World Health Organization (who) to ensure that all maternities, whether
free standing or in a hospital, become centers of breastfeeding support.

ISIS is a collaboration between Durham University Parent-Infant Sleep Lab,
La Leche League, NCT, and UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative, funded by

Policy # 1.5: Nurses coming in contact with mothers, infants or children should receive
standardized education and training on the support and management of lactation.
Lactation management should be included as part of orientation and included as
part of ongoing training and competency evaluation for both nurses and physicians.
Policy #2: Nurses, certified nurse midwives, physicians and other health professionals with expertise
regarding the benefits and management of breastfeeding should educate pregnant and postpartum
women when the opportunity for education exists, for example, during prenatal classes, in clinical
settings, and at discharge teaching.
