Focus on Solutions to Travel Mobility Challenges

The second countywide Senior and Disabled Transportation Summit will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, October 30, at the Joseph Nelson Community Center, 611 Village Drive in Suisun City.  The event is free, and registration begins at 8:30 a.m.  If you would like to attend the Summit, please RSVP to the Solano Transportation Authority (STA) at (707) 424-6075, and let STA know if you need assistance arranging any special transportation needs to travel to the meeting location.

Summit II will present and discuss solutions to the challenges facing transportation services and programs for seniors and disabled individuals in Solano County.  Nearly 150 attendees representing seniors, disabled persons, senior centers, non-profits, transit providers, and medical facilities attended Summit I in June and actively participated in identifying their mobility challenges.

“At the first summit, we heard loud and clear from seniors, the disabled, non-profits and others about mobility issues and concerns” said Jim Spering, Solano Transportation Authority Board Chair and Solano County Supervisor.  “Much time and effort has been put in by the STA, the County, the transit operators and the Senior Coalition to craft options to improve transportation for this important segment of Solano County’s population.  We learned a lot at the last summit and plan to share options designed to help fill the gaps in transportation services and programs.”

The summit is co-hosted by the STA, Solano County, the Solano Senior Coalition and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC).  Two panel discussions are planned to help focus on transit solutions in Solano County as well as highlight successful programs in other counties in the Bay Area.

Supervisor Spering will be back to moderate the event with invited guest speakers, including District 8 Assemblywoman Mariko Yamada, transit staff from all seven transit providers, Transit Consultant Bonnie Nelson from Alameda County, Transit Consultant Corinne Goodrich from San Mateo County Transit District and Paratransit Program Coordinator Kristen Mazur from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.

The keynote speaker will be California District 5 Senator Lois Wolk.  Senator Wolk serves on the California Transportation and Housing Committee, which deals with bills related to public transportation systems.

Refreshments and lunch will be provided for registered participants by Emeritus at Vacaville, Westwind Gardens and Rancho Solano and Starbucks at Texas & Jefferson.

At the first summit in June, the results of survey of seniors and disabled individuals was reported. The survey was the start of the conversation for the summit and provided valuable feedback for all the transportation partners to address the issues and concerns raised.
