To celebrate National Library Week this year the folks at Solano County Library asked a number of Solano “alumni” about their views of the library.

“It’s amazing the number of people who are in the limelight who have ties to Solano County,” said Ann Miller, the Library’s community relations coordinator.  “We’ve contacted everyone from Natalie Coughlin the Olympic swimmer to Ed Rollins the CNN commentator. The responses have been equally diverse– from the inspirational to the warm and fuzzy.”

National Library Week, April 11-17, celebrates the contributions of libraries, librarians and library workers in schools, campuses and communities nationwide. Solano County Library, with its eight locations, a law library, an adult literacy program, and a “virtual” online branch is a place where people of all backgrounds come together to get the help they need to improve their lives.

“We relied on the friend-of-a-friend approach to make contact with these folks. It wasn’t always easy, but once we did, it was nice to know these folks had not forgotten their neighborhood libraries,”  said Miller.

Photographs and quotes from the “Famous Fans of Solano County Library” will be on display at all eight branches during National Library Week and featured on the Library’s Web site at solanolibrary.com.

The following are a sample of quotes from some of the people who were contacted.

Books take on a character computers, Kindles, ipods and texting can’t achieve. They have weight, they have history, they have scent, and they hold the power to transport you to another place. As a young man, trips to the Solano County Library took on almost spiritual proportions for me. You can discover this magic yourself by visiting your local public library; it’s all still there!”

I remember going to the Solano library as a kid and earning free Oakland A's tickets for every 5 books that I read. I loved that!

The library is a temple of human wisdom. There is a stirring in my soul whenever I enter one.
