Researchers knocking on Solano County doors

Law enforcement agencies encourage asking to see ID badges

January 27, 2010

Researchers for two government agencies will be knocking on Solano County doors in the coming months looking to understand the community better.

They will be easy to identify. The researchers will be wearing ID badges from the U.S. Census Bureau or the National Opinion Research Center.

Local law enforcement officials, as well as the researchers, encourage residents to ask to see the identification badges.  Residents are asked to report suspicious individuals to their local police agency.

Census workers will be conducting the decennial census used to reapportion the seats of the U.S. House of Representatives and realign the legislative districts of the state.  Census data is also used to allocate more than $400 billion each year in federal tax dollars back to the states.  Social, demographic and economic data gathered creates a profile of the community that helps guide policy decisions at all levels of government.

Household contacts are expected to begin the week of Feb. 22. Census workers will be delivering questionnaires, verifying addresses and collecting information from households that have not returned their census questionnaires.  The census process is expected to last through August. Some residents may be contacted by census staff via the telephone.

From February through August, select households in Solano County will be asked to participate in a 50-minute in-person interview on energy use.  The National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago is conducting the survey on behalf of the Department of Energy and the Energy Information Administration.
