Schools encouraged to celebrate National Bike to School Day

April 16, 2015

SOLANO COUNTY — Students across the nation will bike to school on May 6 in celebration of National Bike to School Day. Locally, the Solano Safe Routes to School (SR2S) program is encouraging students to tune up their bikes, strap on their helmets and join in on the ride.

The SR2S program promotes walking and bicycling safely to and from school.  Bike to School Day is one of many activities offered to elementary and middle school students in Solano County. Other programs include bicycle safety rodeos, walking school buses, traffic safety assemblies, walking Wednesdays and walk and roll events, which encourages students to walk or ride their bikes to school.

"Bike to School Day raises awareness about Safe Routes to School," says Tracy Nachand, Sr. Health Education Specialist at Solano County.  “Along with promoting safety, the program aims to improve children's health by increasing daily physical activity by walking and biking to school.”

All elementary and middle schools that participate in Bike to School Day will receive bicycle-related incentives to distribute to students who ride their bike on May 6.

“Students arrive at school energized and ready to learn,” Nachand adds. “And, when there are fewer cars dropping off students, there’s less traffic congestion and less air pollution around schools.”

Schools must register by April 27 by contacting Tracy Nachand, Sr. Health Education Specialist at (707) 784-8638 or at [email protected].  More information on SR2S is available at www.solanosr2s.ca.gov.
