Nurse-Family Partnership Celebrates 5 years Serving First-Time Moms

March 20, 2015

SOLANO COUNTY – Solano County's Nurse-Family Partnership will celebrate its fifth year serving first-time, at-risk, low-income moms by honoring past and current graduates of the program. The graduation ceremony and 5-year celebration will take place on Wed. March 25 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the County Family Health Services building, located at 2101 Courage Drive, Multipurpose Room in Fairfield.

Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) is an evidence-based program that helps transform the lives of vulnerable first-time moms. Each mother is paired with a public health nurse early in her pregnancy, and receives ongoing home visits until the child turns two years old. The rigorously-tested program has been in operation for more than 30 years and has been implemented in 43 states.

Independent research shows that communities benefit from this program, which is supported by improved health results, including better pregnancy outcomes, improved school readiness and increased maternal employment.

"I am very proud of what these moms have accomplished," says Nancy Calvo, Director of Solano County Materials Child and Adolescent Health.  “It is exciting to see how NFP can help break the cycle of poverty and empower mothers to raise their children successfully.”

Since the program began in 2010, Solano NFP has served more than 300 mothers and their families.

“As a first-time mom, NFP has been very helpful because my nurse prepared me on what developmental milestones to expect from my baby,” says Shauna Elder, a past graduate of the program.  “My nurse helped guide me to become the mother I am today.”
