County to host workshop to discuss rising sea levels

February 23, 2015

SOLANO COUNTY – Solano County, together with the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC) and Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) invite the public to attend a workshop about planning for storms, tides and rising sea levels in Solano County and its cities this Friday, Feb. 27 from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at the Solano County Events Center, 601 Texas St., Fairfield.

The workshop is a chance for local government officials and the public to learn about sea level rise impacts and resilience planning as they relate to Solano County.

"Local governments all around the Bay are starting to think about the impacts of climate change and what it means to be resilient in the context of their own communities," says Solano County Supervisor John Vasquez.  “This workshop is an opportunity for Solano County to start the conversation and begin planning for the future.”

Participants will discuss how adaptation and hazard planning can lead to local and regional resilience, which can be applied to preparing for disruptions due to climate change, natural hazards and other environmental disruptions.

From a local perspective, the workshop will provide government officials with a greater understanding of how Solano County can work with the relevant cities, agencies and organizations to put together a plan toward resilience.

“Everyone has a role to play in protecting our community against rising sea levels,” Vasquez says.  “By working together, we can identify potential threats and take action to move our County toward sustained resilience.”

Participants will also receive and update from FEMA about the current flood risk in Solano County and how regional data efforts can support local adaptation planning.
