Summit to discuss solutions for seniors living in poverty

October 9, 2014

SOLANO COUNTY – Everyone is invited to participate in an upcoming summit meeting to discuss potential solutions for seniors living in poverty conditions in Solano County.  The discussion will take place on Thurs., Oct. 16 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Joe Nelson Community Center, 611 Village Drive in Suisun.  Registration opens at 9 a.m.

Hosted by Solano County and the Senior Coalition of Solano County, the meeting, dubbed "Summit II," is a continuation of the June, 2014 summit, which identified the existing - and rapidly growing – number of seniors living in poverty, their ongoing struggle and the difficult decisions they make every day.

Since the initial meeting, a dedicated group of community volunteers, under the leadership of Solano County Supervisor Jim Spering and Rochelle Sherlock, Consultant to the Senor Coalition, have met to discuss issues such as access to services, resources, legislative advocacy and community volunteerism.  Summit II is an opportunity for the public to get involved and continue this conversation.

“The public and private members of the Working Group came together and developed a menu of options for tackling every day issues our seniors face,” said Supervisor Jim Spering.  “I am excited to share some proposed low-cost, short-term solutions that are easily implemented with immediate benefit to our seniors.”

Guests are provided with a free continental breakfast and lunch, sponsored by Emeritus Senior Living.

RSVP by Oct. 14 to Evelyn Glenn, [email protected] or by calling (707) 784-8269.
