County Supervisor Skip Thomson to serve as member of Delta Stewardship Council

January 13, 2017

SOLANO COUNTY – District 5 Supervisor Skip Thomson will serve as a member of the Delta Stewardship Council as of January 3, 2017 after being elected chair of the Delta Protection Commission.

The Delta Stewardship Council plays an important role in representing the collective voice of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta system.  It is responsible for providing a more reliable water supply, in addition to protecting, restoring and enhancing the Delta ecosystem.  The council is made up of seven members and is advised by a ten-member board of nationally and internationally renowned scientists.

As a Solano County Supervisor, Thomson's priorities include preserving and advocating for the Delta and its residents, as he has done since January, 2014 as part of the Delta Conservancy Board.

"Being a member of the Delta Stewardship Council is an honor and a privilege," said District 5 Supervisor Skip Thomson.  “As a passionate advocate for the Delta, I will work to make sure that its beauty, natural resources and cultural significance is preserved.”

California’s Delta system is the largest estuary on the west coast and is the hub of the state’s major waterway systems.  Because the Delta is linked to so many statewide issues, the Council provides a broad, statewide prospective; making decisions pertaining to water use, flood management and the protection and preservation of the Delta watershed.

Established by the California Legislature as part of Senate Bill X7-1 in November, 2009 – one of several bills passed at this time related to water supply reliability, ecosystem health and the Delta – the Act, effective on February 3, 2010, created the Delta Stewardship Council.

In Solano County, Supervisor Thomson’s supervisorial district includes parts of the Yolo Bypass, the Cache Slough region and other portions of the Delta.
