Can I continue to carry my weapon(s) even though my CCW license is expired if I have submitted my renewal application?
No. Any expired CCW license is invalid and it is illegal to carry a concealed weapon in the state of California if you do not have a valid CCW license issued by a county within the state.

Can I Copy/Alter My Permit?
No

Can I Laminate My Permit?
Permits can be laminated as long as restrictions on the back are visible. You will need to laminate and then fold for your wallet if need be.

Do I need to bring my weapon to my appointment?
No. Please do not bring ANY weapon into the Sheriff’s Office for any reason.

Does my weapon need to be registered to me?
Yes, any weapon listed on a CCW license must be registered with California Department of Justice, Firearms Bureau to the holder of the license. [oag.ca.gov/firearms]

How do I schedule an appointment for a new Carry Concealed Weapon license with Solano County?

How far in advance should I submit my renewal application?
30-45 days.

How long is a CCW license good for?
A Standard CCW license if valid for a period of 2 years.
A Judicial CCW license if valid for a period of 3 years. You must be a Solano County judge to apply for a judicial CCW license with our office.
A Custodial CCW license is valid for a period of 4 years. You must be a Solano County Sheriff's Office Correctional Officer to apply for a custodial CCW license.
A Reserve CCW license is valid for a period of 4 years. You must be a Solano County Sheriff’s Office reserve deputy to apply for a reserve CCW license.
An Employment permit is valid for a period of 90 days. You must be an out of county resident who works in Solano County and can establish that you spend significant amount of time in the county to apply for an employment CCW permit. It should be noted that Employment CCW permits are only valid in the county of issuance.


How old do I have to be before I can apply for a CCW license?
An applicant must be at least 21 years old before applying for a CCW license.

I am active duty military living in Solano County, but do not have a California driver’s license. Can I apply?
Yes. In addition to the residency documentation required for standard applications, you will be asked to submit a copy of a California Identification Card and a copy of your current orders to meet the residency requirement.

I am not a US citizen. Can I apply for a CCW license?
Yes. You will be required to provide a copy of your Resident Alien Card or I-94 card.

I do not have utility bills in my name, are there any other bills that are accepted as proof of residency?
Residency documentation must be current monthly recurring bills that come in the applicants name to the applicants Solano County address. We do not accept monthly mortgage statements or any annual statements such as DMV registration or tax bills. Documentation must be current, monthly, recurring, and in applicants name.

I have had law enforcement contact. Do I need to notify the CCW unit?
Yes. The license holder shall immediately notify the CCW unit of any arrest, or if they become the subject to an investigation or court order/temporary restraining order.

I just moved to Solano County and have a valid CCW license from another California county. What must I do?
You are required to notify the issuing authority that you have moved and provide them with your new address. The issuing authority will provide you with instruction on when to surrender their permit. Once you have surrendered your permit, you must now apply for a "NEW CCW License" with Solano County. There is no way to “transfer” permits.

I was denied in the application process. I appealed the denial and my appeal request was denied. Can I re-apply?
You can re-apply one year from the date of your appeal denial notification.

I was in a situation where I displayed and/or utilized my concealed weapon. Do I need to notify the CCW unit?
Yes. The licesee shall immediately notify the CCW unit should they display or utilize the concealed weapon.

Is My Permit Valid Throughout the State of California?
Standard, Judicial, Custodial and Reserve CCW permits are valid throughout the state. Employment permits are only valid in the county of issue.

Is there any way of getting a sooner appointment, or to request being placed on a waiting list?
Due to the volume of requests for new licenses, we are unable to maintain a waiting/cancellation list. Applicants have the option of checking our appointment scheduling site for new openings and cancellations as they become available.

My contact information has changed (ie: email, phone, cell phone, employment). Do I need to notify your office and/or submit a modification request?
Yes. Please notify our office of any changes to your employment or contact information so we can keep your file current. You may provide us with updated information by mail or email. You are not required to submit a modification request unless you've had an address, name or weapon change.

My permit has expired. Can I still submit a renewal application?
You may submit a renewal application up to 1 year past your issued permit expiration date. After one year, you will be required to submit a New CCW license application.

What are the criteria for consideration of issuance?
Pursuant to California Penal Code § 26150, the criteria are as follows:

  1. Proof that the person applying is of good moral character
  2. Proof that good cause exists for the issuance
  3. Proof that the person applying is a resident of the county or a city within the county.
  4. Proof that the person applying has completed, at least, an 8-hour course of training including instruction on firearm safety, the law regarding the permissible use of a firearm and qualification of weapon(s)/type(s) to be listed on license.
  5. Proof of no statutory prohibitions.


What do I need to bring to my appointment?
You will be required to bring various items with you at the time of your appointment. Please refer to the “New CCW License Appointment Checklist” for each item required. Our office reserves the right to reschedule you appointment for New CCW License if you do not have all of the items listed on the checklist with you at the time of the appointment.

What do I need to do if I have changed my address and still live in Solano County?
You must report any change of residence to Solano County Sheriff's Office CCW unit within 10 days. In addition, you must complete a CCW modification.

What do I need to do if I have moved out of Solano County?
You must report any change of residence to Solano County Sheriff's Office CCW unit within 10 days. If your permit is in good standing, you license will remain valid for ninety (90) days from the date of the change. You will then be required to surrender your license to SCSO.

What should I do if I am pulled over or contacted by a law enforcement officer?
During any law enforcement contact, you are required to disclose your status as a CCW license holder and you must disclose whether or not you are carrying a weapon on your person or in your vehicle.
